South Open’s First Top Alternative Solo Winner: Avery Gay
By Jada Sharp & Kari Moyle
Avery Gay has taken the dance world by storm as she excels in her art while continuing to break barriers. She wins the title as the first “Top Alternative Best Dancer Solo Winner” in the history of the NDCA at the 2019 South Open Dancesport Championships. At just 16-years-old, Avery’s reputation precedes her. She is highly decorated and never ceases to amaze us.
Although her participation in this specific competition is in December, Avery trains all year round in many different styles for competitions, events, and professional work.
Avery is an advanced dancer from Scottsdale, Arizona and is best known from competing on the hit dance competition reality series “World of Dance.” During season two, she competed in a partner piece on Pointe and made it past the duels.
In addition to Pointe, Avery has trained extensively in ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, and more. She debuted her first introduction to ballroom in 2019 at the Dance Stars Festival owned by Karina Smirnoff and Elena Grinenko from Dancing With The Stars. Following this, she was invited to perform at the 2019 South Open Dancesport Championships.
Gay helped to make history as she also competed at the 2019 South Open Danceport Championships. She showcased ballroom and contemporary pieces in the professional gala as a featured performer, in addition to winning the competition’s first ever Alternative Solo Title as a competitor. South Open is the first professional ballroom competition to open up its doors to our beloved alternative styles.
Avery continues to make history within the competition as one of the competition’s first “South Open Stars.” That exclusive group is composed of years past featured performers and many other talented youth dancers that align with South Open’s mission.
Avery was asked in a recent interview by Karina Smirnoff, “how much do you enjoy ballroom on a scale from 1 to 10?” She answered, “On a scale from 1-10… a million! I love ballroom, and I want to do it for the rest of my life!”
Avery Gay is months away from participating in the highly anticipated South Open Dancesport Championships 2021. South Open is grateful to have Avery as an exclusive member of their family and is honored to provide a platform for dancers of all styles to participate in this new experience.
