One of the First Youth Males to Perform in a NDCA Professional Showcase: JT Church

By Jada Sharp & Kari Moyle

JT Church is gifted beyond his years, and his work ethic speaks volumes. He became one of the first ever youth males to perform in a National Dance Council of America professional showcase in the history of the NDCA at the 2019 South Open Dancesport Championships. JT is currently 15-years-old. He started his love for dance at home, and by the time he was 5-years-old, his parents were more than convinced of his potential. From there, he trained at the Gainesville Dance Center in Virginia and has not stopped dancing ever since. JT Church trains extensively in all styles, and male representation is very important to him. He shared to his social media about one of the organizations he’s partnered with, “I support #DANCEON and their mission to support boys that dance and create awareness against bullying!”

While JT is a part of many other projects and movements, he is no stranger to competitions. He has won numerous titles within the competitive world including national titles: Radix National Junior Core Performer Winner 2018 and The Dance Awards Mini Male Best Dancer 2017. In addition to many other studio competition awards, he has gained accolades and notoriety through hit dance competitions on reality TV. In 2016, he placed Runner-Up in “So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation.” In 2018, JT became a Junior Professional on the only season of Dancing with the Stars Juniors, mentored by DWTS adult Pro, Alan Bersten. He was partnered with youth celebrity skater, Sky Brown, and the duo took home the coveted mirrorball, winning first place.

Even with so many accomplishments, he continues to expand his professional capabilities. In 2020, JT appeared in his first movie, "Christmas Waltz", which aired on the Hallmark Channel and featured Choreography by Jean Marc Generoux.

JT Church is one of the most versatile artists you'll ever meet, and he goes above and beyond in everything he does.

JT Church continues to make history in the industry, and he’s proved to excel in all styles, including ballroom. South Open Dancesport Championships featured JT Church in the professional showcase gala, which marks his title as one of the first youth males to acquire this opportunity. He started off the night with a dynamic group piece and left the audience speechless in his fusion routine with fellow Dancing With the Stars Jr. Pro, Kamri Peterson. On the same day of his show performance, he also took first place as a competitor in the youth International Latin division.

JT Church continues to make history within the competition as one of the competition’s first “South Open Stars.” That exclusive group is composed of years past featured performers and many other talented youth dancers that align with South Open’s mission. JT Church is months away from participating in the highly anticipated South Open Dancesport Championships 2021. South Open is grateful to have JT as an exclusive member of their family and is honored to provide a platform for dancers of all styles to participate in this new experience.
