Are you interested in starting Ballroom dancing? International Latin is a great place to start! The dances in Latin Ballroom are fun, yet sophisticated. Even though this style was made for competition, it can be done at weddings, dances, and many other social events. Latin consists of sharp and intricate movements, while also showcasing beautiful lines. This style of Ballroom includes five dances: Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive.

Cha Cha Cha

The Cha Cha Cha is a playful, yet classy dance. It is meant to showcase the chemistry and fun between two people dancing. This is done by showcasing reaction and response through rhythm of movement. The follower responds to the leader’s reaction to movement. Clearly, a strong connection between 2 partners is key in Cha Cha Cha!

Samba

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Samba is a carnival. It is more lighthearted than the other dances and embodies a fun party or celebration. There must be a constant sense of excitement throughout the dance. The Samba is known for its emphasized hip movements.

Rumba

Rumba is the dance of love, and is the slowest dance out of all five. It displays a sense of affection and passion. Rumba’s can be intense or a lighthearted story of people who are expressing their love of dance together. This dance is known for its beautiful lines and cuban hip action.

Paso Doble

Paso Doble tells the story of the bullfights originating in Spain. The man is usually the matador, while the woman represents the cape. The two roles are usually fierce and dance with commitment in the movement. In the Paso Doble, beautiful shapes are created between the partners.

Jive

Jive is the most energetic and upbeat dance! It has a happy and cheerful essence to it. With sharp kicks, flicks, and tricks, the Jive will put a smile on your face. Here is the link to one of our favorite South Open Jives done by Cheyenne and Sasha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR57_wxcGBc.

Cheyenne Murillo and Sasha Altukhov

One of South Open’s most talented couples in International Latin are Cheyenne and Sasha. They have won many titles, including placing 3rd in the International Championships in England and winning the Ohio Star Ball. Along with competing professionally, the couple teaches Latin Ballroom at Center Stage, which is a studio based in Utah. As Cheyenne and Sasha inspire the youth, they continue to amaze and challenge their peers in the fierce competitive world of International Latin.
